Despite my disgust with the self indulgent, superficial and utterly excessive consumption which is contributing to the catastrophic environmental disaster looming ahead of us all, let me offer you my contribution to the mess.

The PrioritySpace DVD rom starts with the animated work Discovery-Familiarisation-Recognition and moves directly into a fully interactive section which explores 5 major aspects, Music, Acoustics, Timbre, Harmony and Structure.
Each section has a series of pages with information, tasks and interactive demonstrations.
Music:
Deals with the animation itself. Explains its relationship with written music and introduces the basic acoustic and structural concepts about to be explored.
Acoustics:
Introduces the basic concepts behind sound production. Looks at how sound is represented graphically and how it is translated into the digital domain.
Timbre:
Explores the science behind the tone production of instruments through standing waves. Looks at different wave forms, the development of complex of waves through wave synthesis, how these relate to harmonics and finally how these factors are shaped to become the tonal quality that we hear from each different instrument.
Harmony:
Introduces how the western tonal system came about and looks at why the intervals we use in the western tonal system sound good to us. Also explains how this influences our choices in chord progressions.
Structure:
Built on all the things learned previously about how our tonal system works, we now take a look at how keys and chords make up musical structure. There are tasks to match pieces of music with their written and animated counterpart, and a music memory game where the structure of this journey of exploration holds the key to a prize compilation of over 90 minutes of music.
The focus on mathematics throughout this musical exploration exposes the broader role that rational science based disciplines can have in the creative sphere. I hope that my work will encourage young kids to explore their musical interests and realise that there are many ways that playing an instrument and understanding music can participate in their lives without being constrained to just performance or the arts sector.
